学院最早于1855年成立，当时只有一间房屋作为校舍，它在周日也当作教堂使用。
4、学院和学生生活
伯里亚学院为全体学生提供全额奖学金，许多学生同时也得到食宿补助。通常来说, 伯里亚学院入学的花消从"一颗想要学习的心"到"一个牲畜头的价格"不等。
学院只录取需要财政补助的学生;通常情况下，不会录取收入不在美国收入最低的40%的家庭的学生。由于政策规定，至少有80%的学远学生来自南部阿巴拉契亚地区和周围的地区，7%的国际学生来自发展中国家--非洲，南亚的东南亚，欧洲，中南美洲国家--通常每年只从一个国家录取一名学生。这一政策保证至少有70个国家的学生出现在伯里亚学院的学生群体当中。所有的国际学生都得到与美国学生一样的经济待遇，都获得全额奖学金。
